The Aseneth Home Page:
Hyperlinked Bibliography

by Dr Mark Goodacre,
Duke University

This bibliography focuses on texts and studies of Joseph and Aseneth, attempting to provide a useful, on-line guide to available material. As far as possible, I have attempted to "hyperlink" the bibliography, giving leads to publishers, electronic catalogues, homepages of scholars and, on occasion, abstracts and full texts. Where authors' names are hyperlinked, the links are to their homepages. Where the title of the work is hyperlinked, the link is to full text, abstract or publisher's information. If you know of missing or incomplete entries, please let me know at [email protected] so that we can build this bibliography to become the most comprehensive and up-to-date bibliography on Joseph & Aseneth available.

The Joseph and Aseneth On-Line Bibliography is divided into the following sections:

 1. Editions

(a) Greek

P. Battifol, "Le Livre de la Prière d'Aseneth", Studia Patristica: Etudes d'ancienne littérature chrétienne, I-II (Paris: Leroux, 1889-90), pp. 1-115

A version of the Greek text found in the eleventh-twelfth-century manuscript Vaticanus Graecus 803. The same volume features M. R. James's edition of the Latin text based on the twelfth-century manuscript Corpus Christi 424.

Available for free as google ebook from the link above.

Marc Philonenko, Joseph et Aséneth: Introduction, Texte critique, Traduction, et Notes (Studia Post Biblica, Leiden: E. J. Brill, 1968)

Philonenko's preference for a shorter text receives broad support by Ross Kraemer (see below). This edition features text-critical apparatus and translation into French. Philonenko's text is the basis for Cook's English translation.

Christoph Burchard, "Ein vorläufiger griechischer Text von Joseph und Aseneth" in Gesammelte Studien zu Joseph und Aseneth: Berichtigt und ergänzt Herausgegeben mit Unterstützung von Carsten Burfeind (Studia in Veteris Testamenti Pseudepigrapha 13; Leiden: E.J. Brill, 1996), pp. 161-209; also available in Dielheimer Blätter zum Alten Testament 14 (1979), pp. 2-53; & 16 (1982), pp. 37-39

Burchard's eclectic, longer text is the basis for his English translation in Charlesworth's Old Testament Pseudepigrapha (see below). Quite the best place to access Burchard's text is in the recent Gesammelte Studien listed first here: it is easier to get hold of this and it is in computer format with diacriticals and so on. But note that the text is also available in the following volume.

A. M. Denis (ed.) Concordance Grecque des Pseudépigraphes d'Ancien Testament: Concordance, Corpus des Textes, Indices Avec la collaboration d'Yvonne Janssens et le concours du CETEDOC (Louvain-la-Neuve: Université Catholique de Louvain Institut Orientaliste,1987), 852-9

Another means of accessing Burchard's text (but the print is small).

(b) Latin

P. Battifol, "Le Livre de la Prière d'Aseneth", Studia Patristica: Etudes d'ancienne littérature chrétienne, I-II (Paris: Leroux, 1889-90), pp. 89-115

M. R. James' edition of the Latin text based on the twelfth-century manuscript Corpus Christi 424.

Available for free as google ebook from the link above.

(c) Syriac

E. W. Brooks, Historia Ecclesiastica Zachariae Rhetori vulgo adscripta (= CSCO, Scriptores Syri, III. v, Textus; Paris, 1919), pp. 21-55

Available for free as an ebook at archive.org from the link above.

Latin translations of the Syriac:

G. Oppenheim, Fabula Josephi et Asenethae apocrypha e libro syriaco latine versa (Berlin, 1886)

E. W. Brooks, Historia Ecclesiastica [as above] (= CSCO, Scriptores Syri, III. v, Versio; Louvain, 1924), pp. 15-39

Both of these are available for free as ebooks at archive.org from the links above.

(d) Armenian

A. Carrière, "Une version arménienne de l'Histoire d'Asséneth" in Nouveaux Mélanges Orientaux (= Publications de l'École des Langues Orientales Vivantes, IIe Série, vol. xix; Paris, 1886), pp. 471-512 [The text of Chapters 22-29, with a French translation].

S. Hovsepheantz, A Treasury of Old and New Primitive Writers, Vol. 1 (Uncanonical Books of the Old Testament; Venice, 1896), pp. 152-98

English translation of the Armenian:

J. Issaverdens, The Uncanonical Writings of the Old Testament found in the Armenian MSS of the Library of St. Lazarus, translated into English (2nd edition; Venice, 1934), pp. 79-128

(e) Slavonic

S. Novakovic, "Srpsko-slovenski zbornik iz vremena despota Stefana Lazarevica: 10. Zitie Asenethi" in Starine, ix (Zagreb, 1877), pp. 27-42

V. M. Istrin, "Apokrif ob Iosife i Asenefe" in Drevnosti: trudy Slavyanskoy komissii Imperatorskogo Moskovskogo arkheologicheskogo obshchestva, iii (Moscow, 1898), pp. 146-99

(f) Middle English

Russell A. Peck (ed.), The Storie of Asneth (Originally Published in Heroic Women from the Old Testament in Middle English Verse (Kalamazoo, Michigan: Western Michigan University for TEAMS, 1991), reproduced on-line with an introduction by Russell Peck

A middle English version of the story, which survives in a single manuscript, Ellesmere 26.A.13, which was once part of the Bridgewater collection and is now in the Huntington Library. It was probably based on the twelfth century Latin version (see above). This hypertext version is a great resource, with a comprehensive introduction and useful annotations.
